4-h Fair 2009

This last week was the fair in our community. Mark has always had the kids show animals in the fair. He has been their 4-h leader and has taught them about sheep and pigs. I told him that was going to be his job if that's what he wanted to have them do. Both Shelby and Mayli showed a pig and a sheep. Shelby has done this for a few years so she is used to what it all entails. Mayli on the other hand, is not used to this yet and we encountered a little difficulty. She did pretty well with the pig and was mostly able to stay with the pig... but when it came time to show the sheep she had some trouble. First of all, the sheep is bigger than her and she had to hold it's head and lead it around the pen. She only weighs like 70 pounds and the sheep weighed twice that. Imagine the results and it happened.

Right after this picture was taken the sheep took off with her trying to hold on. It kind of drug her around the ring and stepped on her in the process. She didn't bawl but looked like she might. She hung with it really good!

Shelby and Mayli were both showing their lambs at the same time during the quality (grading the animal) portion of the judging. It worked out a little better this time for her because we put the halter on the sheep.

There were actually four Murdocks being judged at once in this portion but I only got three of them in this picture. Shelby sold her sheep for $4.50 per pound (it weighed 135) at the Fat Stock Show and Mayli was able to sell her pig for $5.35 per pound (pig weighed 226).

We took two sheep and two pigs to the fair and were only able to sell one of each. I won't say what we will be doing with the other two! :)
